Write Like You Talk
This past weekend, I spoke with John Costello, the author of Executive Hoodlum. He shared that an entertainment company bought the film/TV rights to his book. He is too close to his own success, however, to even recognize that he’s a great writer!
It didn’t take me long to figure out the secret to John’s success: he writes like he talks! He tells his story – one you would not believe, by the way! In fact, Executive Hoodlum (executivehoodlum.com) is based on his life growing up. His story is so riveting that I read it in two sittings!
Let me give you the four sure-fire ways for bringing out the book in YOU:
1 – Identify your reader.
Author/reader relationships are two-way streets. Before you can write a book, figure out to whom you are speaking. Who will be interested in what you are ready to share? Did I hear you say: No one would want to read what I have to say? Don’t go there!
2 – Schedule a date to begin writing your book.
Just as you make appointments to go to dinner with friends, get a date on the books to begin writing your book. At the end of your one-hour writing appointment, schedule the next writing date with yourself for the following day.
3 – Give yourself a book deadline!
You know the saying: A goal is a dream with a deadline! And that’s how your book will becomes a reality! Write one hour a day for 32 weeks. And guess what? If you only write 200 words an hour, you will have a 180-page manuscript finished in eight months!
4 – Write like you talk!
Your conversational tone will draw readers in from the moment they read your first page. I would love nothing more than for you to tell me that your book is also going to become a television series!
